Woods worth $740 million, Jordan a billionaire: Forbes

Golfers Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and former NBA player Michael Jordan are among the 20 wealthiest American celebrities, Forbes reported on Wednesday.

The 14-times major champion, who trails only Jack Nicklaus (18 majors) on the all-time list, recently launched a competitive comeback after being sidelined for more than 15 months while recovering from back surgery.

Woods who went through a costly divorce in 2010 and lost several sponsors after revelations of multiple infidelity, is seventh on the list, while Mickelson is 18th, with an estimated worth of $375 million.

Jordan, 53, who retired in 2003 with the mantle of arguably the greatest basketballer, is worth $1.2 billion according to the magazine, good for fourth on the list, which is topped by filmmaker George Lucas ($4.6 billion).

Forbes says eligibility for the list was limited to United States citizens who are rich because of their fame, rather than famous because they are rich.

According to Forbes, President-elect Donald Trump belongs in the latter category.

Sourav Ganguly reunites with Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh at Yuvraj Singh’s wedding reception

Ganguly, who captained India from 2000-05, led the team to the final of the 2003 World Cup. His five-year reign also saw India shedding the tag of ‘tigers at home, lamb abroad’.Ganguly, who is now the boss of Cricket Association of England, led India in 49 ODIs and 147 Tests, winning 21 and 76, respectively.

IOA polls once in four years, not necessarily in Olympic years

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president N. Ramachandran, on Friday, reiterated that the elections will be held in 2018 as per the new IOA constitution which has been approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), and not during the Olympic year as is widely believed.

Speaking to presspersons here after IOAs Executive Committee meeting, Ramachandran said, In March 2014, the IOC wrote (back) to me stating clearly that elections are to be conducted once in four years.

On the All-India Tennis Association (AITA) being de-recognised by the Sports Ministry

It is a debatable decision. The IOA has a view while the ministry has a different one. The IOA is going to meet the ministry with all senior IOA members, and impress upon it that there are issues which need further clarification. The AITA is one such case.

On whether the peace deal with Narinder Batra (associate vice-president of IOA and president of Hockey India) was done with an eye on the 2018 elections

We didnt do it for the elections. We did this so that there is no infighting within the IOA. It was a genuine effort from both sides to ensure sports development goes forward.

Will you contest in the 2018 elections?

It is a long way ahead. As far as I am concerned, I am looking at this term which is till Feb. 2018. After that what happens is a different issue.

On the infighting within various NSFs

We will advise all NSFs that if they have issues, they will have to go by the IOA constitution. Otherwise, the IOA will see how best they can take action against NSFs. There are disputes in gymnastics, basketball and boxing. We will sit down with both groups and decide how best to resolve them. A report will be submitted to the IOA within two months time.

On two factions in volleyball

The matter has been decided in court. The lawyers of both groups agreed in the Madras High Court for an arbitration. The arbiter (Judge K. Chandru) is giving orders like the Lodha Commitee. The IOA cannot interfere.

Elections will be held only for the presidents post. Whatever decision Chandru takes, the VFI has to abide.

Each member of World Cup winning team to get Rs. 10 lakh

The Indian kabaddi team was in town for a felicitation by Sport Minister Vijay Goel on Thursday.

The team recently won the World Cup after a tight 38-29 win against Iran in the final with the tournament being played according to the same rules as the PKL including the likes of bonus points and loud, cheering music.

India captain Anup Kumar said it made sense since there were not many international competitions in kabaddi barring the Asian Games and PKL was what most players, both Indian and foreign, were used to through the year. He also refuted any suggestion that there was no competition for India. We lost to Korea in the first game, we were trailing against Iran in the final. There is a lot of competition but it is only good for the sport. If more countries do not play the game, how can we expect it to be taken seriously for Olympics? We need more and more teams to play the sport to raise its profile, Anup said. India had trailed in the early part of the game before bouncing back to retain the crown.

Goel also announced a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh each for the players. All players and the coach will be awarded. We will also strive to get the game included in Olympics, Goel said.

Man-of-the-tournament and top-scorer in the final, raider Ajay Thakur said more and more foreign players were coming to India for the PKL and improving their standards.

When you spend so much time with and against each other you are bound to learn the weak points of other players, know their strengths and their secrets. They come here and learn.

But we have the advantage of having played kabaddi for centuries. I have myself been playing for 10 years now. That is our strength. But it is getting close constantly, Thakur said.

India had managed to get the better of Iran by a single point in the 2014 Asian Games final, which both players admitted made this victory more sweet.

Free Press poll: Donald Trump gains on Hillary Clinton as race in Michigan tightens

Hillary Clinton is hanging onto a narrow 4-point lead over Donald Trump in Michigan heading into the last weekend before Tuesdays election, with a new Free Press poll showing clear momentum for the Republican nominee in a state that several weeks ago was believed all but decided for the Democrat.

The poll, done exclusively for the Free Press by EPIC-MRA of Lansing, shows Clintons support steady at 42% — up a point from where it was late last month. But it also clearly shows Republicans and some independents rallying around Trump in the waning days of the campaign season, with hissupport up four points from two weeks ago to 38%.

Meanwhile, the number of undecided voters –13% — remains extraordinarily high for this late in an election cycle, speaking to the high unfavorable marks voters give both major party candidates. Should they break for Trump on Election Day, it could be decisive, though with that high a number this late in the campaign it could indicate many will sit out this race altogether.

Kabaddi World Cup 2016: India Crush Argentina 74-20

Kabaddi World Cup 2016: India Crush Argentina 74-20

Ahmedabad: India cruised to a comfortable 74-20 win over Argentina as the home raiders flexed their muscles to notch a Kabaddi World Cup record 54-point margin win at the TransStadia here on Saturday.

India hardly broke sweat as Rahul Chaudhari and Ajay Thakur combined to score 25 raid points between them. Manjeet Chhillar and Surender attained a high five each to score 11 points to lead India’s charge.

India are second in group B with 16 points from three games whereas bottom-placed Argentina are yet to open their account after four games.

On Saturday, it was one way traffic as India created a record of most tackles in a World Cup match.

India made a swift start and led 3-0 after three minutes. Nahuel Villamayor opened Argentina’s account in the second minute to trail 1-3.

Pardeep and Sandeep Narwal scored a point apiece as India led 6-1 before Thakur made a successful raid in the fifth minute to help extend India’s led to 9-3.

The hosts immediately inflicted an all out in the sixth minute to lead 12-3.

Thakur led the scoring charts for India in the first half and scored 11 points.

Surjeet was a rock at the back for India and achieved a high five in the first half as India inflicted another all out in the 19th minute to lead 35-11.

Argentina were no match for India and struggled to cope with India’s superiority in all departments. Narwal scored five points for India in the first half as India led 36-13 at the break.

After the break, Thakur attained a super ten in the 22nd minute as India led 38-13.

India didn’t relent at any point in the second half as they led 41-13 after 24 minutes.

An all out was again inflicted by the home boys in the 25th minute to take the lead to 45-13. Chaudhari came on as a substitute on the 26th minute to score his first point as India led 47-15.

He scored two more points in the 28th minute to give India 50-15 lead.

Just after Villamayor bagged seven points for Argentina in the 30th minute, India did not lose any time to inflict another all out to extend their lead to 58-15.

With less than four minutes to go for the final hooter, India inflicted another all out to lead 68-17.

Chaudhari scored 10 points in the second half alone as Argentina struggled to cope with him.

India led 73-19 as Kiran Parmar scored with a two-point raid in the 40th minute to finally thrash the South American nation with a record margin.

Abhinav Bindra to Head NRAI Review Committee on Rio Debacle

Abhinav Bindra to Head NRAI Review Committee on Rio Debacle

New Delhi: India’s first and only individual Olympic gold-medallist Abhinav Bindra was on Thursday named Chairman of a five-member review committee to probe the shooters’ Rio Games debacle but has recused himself from questioning them as he was himself a part of the team.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) said the mandate of the committee is to ‘examine and identify in a cold and ruthless manner’ the causes behind shooting not securing any medals at the Rio Olympics.

The committee is also mandated to recommend concrete steps that NRAI must immediately undertake to ensure that this is not repeated in future Olympics.

Bindra, who retired from the sport after his fourth-place finish in Rio, has told NRAI that though he would not question any of his teammates, he would remain open to any assessment by the review committee.

The NRAI order states that only in “matters specifically pertaining to the interview or findings/conclusions if any against or in favour of any Olympic team athlete that maybe examined by the committee, the Chairman of the committee shall be exempt participation in toto from such tasks by recusal, however upon his own request he too shall make himself available for interview by the remainder of the panel.”

The order further states that, “for this specific issue only, the remaining members of the commission shall officiate jointly, where majority view shall prevail”.

Other members of the committee include former tennis player Manisha Malhotra, who has also been appointed Convenor of the committee, NRAI Secretary Rajiv Bhatia and two journalists.

The order empowers the committee to go into a wide range of factors affecting the performance of the athletes. Also, as per the order, the NRAI Review Committee has been asked to submit its report to the President within a maximum period of four weeks.

The committee is expected to hold its first meeting on the August 30 or 31 and it has also been allowed the use of all available technology to help conduct its work smoothly.

Ireland’s Niall O’Brien, Craig Young, Boyd Rankin Return for Pakistan ODI Series

Ireland’s Niall O’Brien, Craig Young, Boyd Rankin Return for Pakistan ODI Series

Ireland are set to welcome back Niall O’Brien, Craig Young and Boyd Rankin for their forthcoming one-day international series against Pakistan.

The trio all missed the recent drawn series against Afghanistan but will be available for next month’s two ODIs with Pakistan at Malahide, near Dublin.

O’Brien, who struck 72 in Ireland’s 2007 World Cup win over Pakistan, is fit following a calf problem, while Young is back after an elbow injury.

Meanwhile Rankin is set to make his return to Irish cricket, having briefly represented England in just one Test, against Australia at Sydney in 2014.

“It’s great to have an almost full-strength squad to choose from,” said Ireland coach John Bracewell on Thursday.

“The bowling unit performed superbly against Afghanistan with the younger seamers in particular putting their hands up,” the former New Zealand off-spinner added.

“The return of Boyd and Craig adds to that department and gives us plenty of options which is exactly what a coach wants.

“The return of Niall adds experience to the top order. We tried a few different permutations with the batting order last week — some of which worked and some which didn’t.

“Ed Joyce was obviously the stand-out performer in his new role as opener, and it was great to see Gary Wilson return to form.

“It should be a fantastic series — there’s a great recent history between the two countries with some great matches over the past decade, and I’m certain it’ll be two tough games when we meet in Dublin next month.”

‘Narsingh has brought shame to India and wrestling,’ says Sushil’s coach

Sushil will go, if requested by the federation and Government

One thing I can say is that he cannot cry foul this time

Narsingh Yadav

Barely 10 days before the start of the Olympics, India suffered a huge embarrassment as wrestler Narsingh Yadav failed a dope test conducted by NADA, which casts serious doubts on his participation at the quadrennial event.

Narsingh, who had booked Indias berth in the 74kg freestyle category, had to fight a lengthy legal battle against two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar, to make the cut for Rio Games.

With Narsinghs participation in serious doubt, Aruneel Sadadekar/ spoke exclusively to Sushil Kumars coach Satpal Singh.

Narsingh has been detected positive for a banned substance?

Yes, I am shocked and extremely disappointed to hear this. Narsingh has brought shame for India and the countrys wrestling. He is a very senior grappler and this was supposed to be his third Olympics.

He definitely cannot be ignorant with respect to doping matters. It definitely reflects badly on the countrys image and affect the confidence of other wrestlers just 10 days prior to the Olympics.

He was allowed to go after winning a lengthy legal battle against Sushil?

He never won the battle. What had Sushil asked for? He never said that I want to go because I am a two-time Olympic medalist. He only wanted a trial.

We didnt approach the Supreme Court because we put country ahead of us. Narinsgh or Sushil whoever won the medal, it would have benefitted the country.

We didnt want to hamper his (Narsinghs) preparations just a month ahead of Olympics and so had decided to back out.

Now what? Will Sushil go in place of Narsingh?

He will have to check. But, first it is the call of the federation and the sports ministry. They should ideally request Sushil to go and then we can definitely think of competing at Rio.

The Government had spent close to Rs 2 crore on Sushils training and preparation for Rio Games, so definitely we would like to repay that with a medal.

With respect to preparations, is Sushil in shape considering he was denied Rio participation?

Sushil Kumar

IMAGE: Wrestling is in his (Sushil Kumar) blood and he was training day in and day out for the Olympics. Photograph: PTI.

Yes, definitely. Wrestling is in his (Sushil) blood and he was training day in and day out for the Olympics.

Yes, he was sad after being denied a trial but now if he gets a second chance, Sushil will definitely show that he deserved to go by winning a gold medal.

About Narsingh, were there any previous cases of doping against him?

I dont think so. He is a very senior wrestler. One thing I can say is that he cannot cry foul this time.

With respect to Indias medal perspective, nothing really changes if Sushil is cleared to go. The best Indian wrestler will now be going.
