The Africa Cup of Nations, also known as the AFCON, officially CAN (French for Coupe dAfrique des Nations), is the main international association football (soccer) competition in Africa.
It was founded in 1957, sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football or CAF. It has been held every 2 years since 1968. Back then, there were only three participating countriesSudan, Ethiopia and Egypt. South Africa was supposed to compete but were disqualified due to apartheid policies of their government. The first tournament was won by Egypt.
In 1992, the final tournament participants were expanded to 12. Teams were divided into four groups of three, with the top two teams going to the quarter-finals.
In 1996, South Africa hosted the 20th Africa Cup of Nations after their long ban was lifted due to their countrys apartheid. Participants were expanded to 16, into four groups.
In the cups history, Egypt has been the most successful. They have won 7 times, including their famous match against United Arab Republic from 1958 to 1971. Ghana won 4 titles, also Cameroon.
The 2015 event was scheduled to be held in Morocco, but they withdraw as host of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations because of fears it would lead to a further spread of the Ebola virus. The host country became Equatorial Guinea.
The African Cup was switched to odd number years so it will not clash with the FIFA World Cup. This switch only happened in 2013.
The next event scheduled was to be held:
- 2017 Gabon
- 2019 Cameroon
- 2021 Ivory Coast
- 2023 Guinea

Klopp: Its not about my record against Pep
Jurgen Klopp says history will count for little when Liverpool face Pep Guardiolas Manchester City at Anfield on New Years Eve.
While both managers are fairly new to the English Premier League, they do have a fair bit of history between, having met on eight previous occasions when they were managers of their respective Bundesliga clubs, FC Bayern Mnchen and Borussia Dortmund.
While Guardiola is one of the most successful managers in the world, Klopp has enjoyed his fair share of success against him, winning four of their eight encounters albeit with three of them coming in Cup encounters.
We know everything about how Pep played with Bayern but that is not important any more because it is different players and different systems, Klopp said on Thursday.
opp also revealed that neither Joel Matip or Philippe Coutinho would feature for his side on Saturday, as both are still nursing ankle injuries, and he was quick to rubbish reports of a possible move to Anfield for Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Catalonia:Luis Suarez celebrated his bumper new five-year Barcelona deal in style with a double as the champions defeated Espanyol 4-1 in the Catalan derby to move to within three points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid.
However, it was Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi`s skills that stole the show as Barca took advantage of Real`s duties in winning the Club World Cup earlier on Sunday to cut the gap at the top ahead of La Liga`s three-week winter break.
Iniesta teed up Suarez for an early opener before both Iniesta and Messi showed sublime touches for the second eventually finished off by Suarez.
Messi created Barca`s third as well for Jordi Alba before David Lopez pulled a goal back for Espanyol as their 10-game unbeaten run came to an end.
The five-time World Player of the Year wasn`t to be denied, though, as Messi got the goal his performance deserved a minute from time.
Barca`s upturn in form in recent weeks has coincided with the return of veteran playmaker Iniesta from a six-week injury layoff and the Spanish international was to the fore as the hosts dominated throughout.
Iniesta sparked a sweeping counter-attack on eight minutes involving all three of Barca`s star-studded frontline as he fed Suarez, who spun away from the Espanyol defence, before picking out Neymar and the Brazilian`s low cross was fired inches wide by Messi.
Barca had to wait just 10 minutes more to open the scoring as another sumptuous Iniesta pass was expertly controlled by Suarez and he bore down on goal before slotting into the far corner.
For all their dominance in possession, the champions had to wait till the start of the second period to enjoy more clear chances as Messi curled wide from the edge of the box before he teed up Suarez with a brilliant defence splitting pass.
This time the Uruguayan was denied by Diego Lopez, but at a cost as the Espanyol `keeper injured his knee in clashing with Suarez and had to be replaced by Roberto.
Suarez moved level with Messi as La Liga`s top scorer with 12 with Barca`s second, but once again the credit should go to Iniesta and Messi as they dribbled past a combined seven Espanyol defenders before
Messi`s shot was parried by Roberto and Suarez snaffled up the rebound.
Seconds later Messi tore the Espanyol defence apart once more to leave Jordi Alba free to drill the ball into the far corner.
Espanyol did muster a reply to salvage some pride with their first shot on target as Gerard Moreno headed into Lopez`s path, who had stormed forward from centre-back to find the top corner.
However, a virtuoso display from Messi got the finale it deserved as he and Suarez exchanged a one-two before the Argentine prodded between Roberto`s legs.
New Delhi: Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger has urged star forward Alexis Sanchez and midfielder Mesut Ozil to not increase their wage demands, and not let money decide their future. Wenger said that the star duo should reconsider their decision of higher wage demands that wealthier clubs would not shy away from matching.
Arsenal boss is also thinking of resting both the player of their the last champions league group stage match against Basel.
Both players’ contracts are due to end next season, and as for now the club is willing to offer new deals to both. Wenger says “We are in negotiations, yes. The players are 18 months away from the end of their contracts, so it`s normal.”
He further added, I would like to say the luxury of the modern game should be that it`s not only about the money because the players make good money at this level anyway, wherever they play,” Wenger was quoted as saying by Mirror.co.uk.”
Wenger also added, “I believe, personally – maybe I am a bit naive – that it`s more about getting to meet the players` needs. That`s about the way the club has values, the way the club has ambition, the way the club respects the players. So I think, for me, that is more important nowadays and an important ingredient for every player to consider. The money is good everywhere for everybody.”
As far as contract money is concerned, the German midfielder Mesut Ozil is the highest earning player of the club, earning around GBP 140,000 per week, which is just ahead of Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez, who scored terrific a hat-trick this weekend against West Ham.
If reports are to be believed, Ozil is in talks with the Gunners of a new contract worth whooping 200,000 pound-a-week.
Colombia Plane Crash: Football Team’s Plane Crashed After Skipping Refuel Stop: Report
La Paz, Bolivia: The plane that crashed in Colombia killing 71 people including Brazilian footballers had skipped a scheduled refueling stop, media quoted a representative of the Bolivian airline as saying.
“The plane should have refueled in Bogota,” but instead bypassed the Colombian capital and headed straight for its destination Medellin, Gustavo Vargas, a representative of airline LAMIA, was quoted as saying in Bolivian newspaper Pagina Siete.
“The pilot was the one who took the decision not to enter (into Bogota for refueling), because he thought the fuel would last.”
Colombian authorities are investigating what made the plane crash in the mountains of northwest Colombia on Monday night.
The crash killed 71 people including most of the Chapecoense football team from Brazil. Six people including three players miraculously survived.
Announcing the disaster on Monday night, the aviation authority said the plane reported electrical problems just before the crash.
But a Colombian military source told AFP: “It is very suspicious that despite the impact there was no explosion. That reinforces the theory of the lack of fuel.”
Brazilian media said the plane’s fuel capacity may have been inferior to the amount required for the distance of its journey from Santa Cruz in Bolivia to Medellin.
Colombian media, citing investigators, said the plane may have had to wait for another flight to touch down in Medellin before it could land.
Colombian broadcaster W Radio aired a recording of what it said was the captain of another aircraft who said he had heard the pilot of the doomed plane over the radio reporting fuel problems followed by an electrical failure.
British, Bolivian and Brazilian investigators headed to Colombia to help with the probe, authorities said.
Bodies of Brazil Football Team Killed in Crash Arrive Home
The bodies of 50 players, coaches and staff from a Brazilian football team tragically wiped out in a plane crash in Colombia arrived home Saturday for a massive funeral.
Fireworks lit up the sky over the stadium in Chapeco, in southern Brazil, as the Hercules cargo planes touched down at the city’s airport in pouring rain.
The small city is holding a huge funeral to honor its team, Chapecoense Real — an unsung club having a fairytale season until the plane flying it to the biggest match in its history ran out of fuel and smashed into the mountains outside Medellin on Monday night.
The city is expecting some 100,000 people — half its population — to descend on Conda Arena, the stadium where just 10 days ago Chapecoense were lighting up the pitch.
“I came to pay a final tribute from the fans to our team,” said architect Alexandre Bledin, 34, wearing the club’s green and white jersey.
“I still can’t believe what happened.”
The arrival was delayed by an outpouring of emotion along the way.
During a refueling stop in the Amazon city of Manaus, the coffins were consolidated from three planes onto two, for logistical reasons. And they took off two hours late because local authorities and people showed up at the airport to pay tribute to the crash victims, the Air Force said.
In Chapeco, they will go on a funeral procession to the stadium and be laid out on the pitch.
Brazilian President Michel Temer was there to meet the planes on arrival.
The coach of the Brazilian national team, Tite, and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino will attend the memorial at the stadium. The latter canceled a trip to Australia to be there.
‘My son was all passion’
The crash has left the football world in mourning.
Football legends Pele and Maradona as well as current superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have led tributes to the fallen team in recent days.
A minute’s silence for Chapecoense will be held before every Champions League and Europa League game next week.
In Brazil, other clubs have offered Chapecoense players so it can continue competing.
Chapecoense had been on their way to Medellin for the finals of the Copa Sudamericana, South America’s second-biggest club tournament.
Inside the stadium, a single set of goal posts remains — the one star goalkeeper Marcos Danilo Padilha, 31, defended in the semi-final match with a heroic last-minute save that sealed Chapecoense’s trip to the finals.
“It’s a horrible feeling, seeing this and knowing my son will arrive here in a coffin,” said his mother, Ilaide Padilha.
“It’s very sad remembering not only that stop (against Argentina’s San Lorenzo), but also… him running across the grass with his arms wide open. My son was all passion.”
The stadium has capacity for just 19,000 people.
Two giant screens will be set up outside the stadium for the overflow crowd.
Tents have been set up on the pitch for some 2,000 family members and close friends of the victims.
Officials initially said 51 bodies would be flown to Chapeco, but the air force later said there were only 50.
The other victims — Brazilians, Bolivians and a Venezuelan — were flown home Thursday and Friday.
Six people survived the crash, and are being treated in local hospitals.
Chapecoense defender Alan Ruschel is in intensive care after back surgery. Backup goalkeeper Jakson Follmann has undergone multiple surgeries, including the amputation of his right leg.
Authorities are still investigating what caused the crash.
A harrowing recording has emerged of the panicked pilot asking the control tower for priority to land because his British Aerospace 146 jet was out of fuel.
Colombia’s civil aviation safety chief, Freddy Bonilla, said the plane disregarded international rules on fuel reserves.
The Bolivia-based charter company, LAMIA, had its permit suspended Thursday, and the government there ordered an investigation into its operations.
LAMIA, which specializes in flying Latin American football teams, had ferried local clubs and national sides around the region, including superstar Messi.
Colombia Plane Crash: Messi and Argentina Flew Same Aircraft Weeks Ago
Argentina’s Football Association hired a company that charters flights to transport superstar Lionel Messi and the rest of the national team for a World Cup qualifying game without knowing the name of the airline or the model of the plane, an official said Friday.
The plane was the same British Aerospace 146 Avro RJ85 jet operated by Bolivia-based charter company LaMia that later crashed in Colombia, killing 71 people, including most of a Brazilian soccer team.
Argentine Football Association spokesman Miguel Hirsch said Friday the AFA was forced to look for options for a roundtrip Buenos Aires-Belo Horizonte flight after the plane they often use from the Andes airline was sent for technical revisions.
The Associated Press had access to offer sheets that six companies presented. None mentioned the name of the airline. But the one that the AFA’s national team department chose for USD 99,000 was the cheapest one and the only one that did not provide the model of the plane. The second least expensive offer was about USD 3,000 less.
“I suppose that since the AFA is going through financial troubles, it was a question of costs,” Hirsch said in an interview with The AP.
“I suppose that these people went about it in the same way that you go about contacting a travel agency or looking in the internet and buying a ticket for Buenos Aires to New York,” he said. “You don’t check if Delta, American or Continental flight is a Boeing 777, you say – it’s a company, I know it, and it’s the best price.”
Bolivia’s Civil Aviation Authority on Thursday indefinitely suspended all flights operated by LaMia airlines amid reports its charter aircraft ran out of fuel moments before slamming into the Andes mountains on Monday.
Many of the victims were players and coaches from Chapecoense, a small-town Brazilian soccer team that was headed to the finals of one of South America’s most prestigious tournaments after a fairy-tale season that had captivated their soccer-crazed nation.Argentina used the same aircraft before and after their 3-0 defeat to Brazil on Nov. 10 in Belo Horizonte for the qualifiers to Russia 2018.
“Nothing happened, fortunately. But, obviously, within the AFA body, there has been a strong awareness of the risk that was taken,” Hirsch said. “This was a human error. It has been proven that the pilot was carrying less gas than he should. Possibly, that’s one of the reasons why the LaMia company charged less for its charters.”
Led by Julio Grondona since the 1970s, the federation has been in an economic and governance crisis since the late FIFA senior vice president died in 2014.
Hirsch said that in recent months and under its new leadership, the AFA has been in talks with Aerolineas Argentinas to strike a deal so that the country’s flagship carrier can fly the national team.

La Liga: Bale helps leaders Real see off Leganes
A first-half double from Gareth Bale helped Real Madrid cement their position at the top of La Liga with a 3-0 win at home to Leganes on Sunday.
Reeling from a chaotic midweek 3-3 draw at Legia Warsaw in the Champions League, Real got off to a slow start against neighbours Leganes, but Bale put them in charge in the 37th minute.
The Wales international, who netted a sensational half volley against Legia, raced onto a through ball from Isco that split the visiting defence and rounded goalkeeper Jon Serantes to tuck the ball inside the near post from a tight angle.
Bale then cashed in on poor defending from a free kick to hit the second on the stroke of halftime, just beating Serantes to the loose ball from close range.
Real’s Spain striker Alvaro Morata, standing in for the injured Karim Benzema, rounded off the win in the 76th minute.
Real talisman Cristiano Ronaldo had a quiet game and frequently strayed offside, but nearly set up a third for Bale, who was denied by Serantes, who leapt to his left to claw away the Welshman’s header.
Midfield maestro Luka Modric received a rapturous reception from the Bernabeu crowd when he came on in the second half to mark his return from injury after more than a month out.
Morata further delighted supporters by latching onto a Toni Kroos pass to score the third, moving ahead of Bale and Ronaldo as Real’s top scorer this season on eight goals in all competitions.
Real top the standings on 27 points, five clear of champions Barcelona, who visit fourth-placed Sevilla later on Sunday.
ISL: Mumbai City FC go Top After Draw With Atletico de Kolkata
Mumbai: Mumbai City FC moved to the top of the table with a point against Atletico de Kolkata after an entertaining 1-1 draw in Indian Super League clash at Mumbai Mumbai Football Arena, Mumbai, on Tuesday.
Mumbai City FC were looking comfortable after Matias Defederico provided them the lead in the 27th minute but the home side were jolted when midfielder Pronay Halder was sent off for two yellow cards. The numerical advantage worked in Kolkatas favour and they forced the equaliser in the 82nd minute to stay unbeaten in the league.
Atletico de Kolkata now have five points from three matches, while Mumbai City, also unbeaten, are at the top with seven points.
Mumbai FC were forced to leave out marquee player and star striker Diego Forlan after he failed to recover from a knock in the previous clash against NorthEast United FC. Forlans absence paved the way for Boithang Haokip to start for the first time and the talented youngster was the one who had the best looks at the rival goal.
Haokips first chance was as early as the ninth minute when Defederico picked him up with a wonderful through ball but Atletico de Kolkata goalkeeper Debjit Majumder left his charge to avert the danger even though there seemed to be a possible contact.
Haokip again tried his might on goal after being fed by Defederico but this time even though he beat the goalkeeper, the ball struck the crossbar and bounced back into play. The rebound could have been pushed into the goal but nobody got a real touch as the visitors escaped.
Mumbai City got their deserving lead, thanks to some brilliant work from Defederico in the 27th minute. The Argentinean showed remarkable skill to control the ball with his first touch and then did even better to leave two defenders behind and slot the ball past a diving Atletico de Kolkata goalkeeper.
Atletico de Kolkata were struggling to find their feet in the first session but they were all over the Mumbai territory after the change of ends. Borja Fernandez and Javier Lara were doing all the orchestrating and their best chance to equalize came in the 65th minute. Laras cross from the right fell unexpectedly for Sameehg Doutie inside a crowded Mumbai goalmouth but Doutie only managed to tap the ball wide from handshaking distance.
The match swung in the visitorss favour in the 72nd minute when Mumbai midfielder Pronay Halder was sent off for a second bookable offence. Atletico de Kolkata capitalised on the numerical advantage and got their equaliser through Lara. The Spanish midfielder was class personified as he got away from Jackichand Singh on top of the box and let got a fierce shot that sailed into the top corner of the nets.
With eight minutes still left to be played, Atletico de Kolkata pressed hard for the winner but the Mumbai defence did well to troop out with a point.
