Woods worth $740 million, Jordan a billionaire: Forbes

Golfers Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and former NBA player Michael Jordan are among the 20 wealthiest American celebrities, Forbes reported on Wednesday.

The 14-times major champion, who trails only Jack Nicklaus (18 majors) on the all-time list, recently launched a competitive comeback after being sidelined for more than 15 months while recovering from back surgery.

Woods who went through a costly divorce in 2010 and lost several sponsors after revelations of multiple infidelity, is seventh on the list, while Mickelson is 18th, with an estimated worth of $375 million.

Jordan, 53, who retired in 2003 with the mantle of arguably the greatest basketballer, is worth $1.2 billion according to the magazine, good for fourth on the list, which is topped by filmmaker George Lucas ($4.6 billion).

Forbes says eligibility for the list was limited to United States citizens who are rich because of their fame, rather than famous because they are rich.

According to Forbes, President-elect Donald Trump belongs in the latter category.

Klopp: Its not about my record against Pep

Jurgen Klopp says history will count for little when Liverpool face Pep Guardiolas Manchester City at Anfield on New Years Eve.

While both managers are fairly new to the English Premier League, they do have a fair bit of history between, having met on eight previous occasions when they were managers of their respective Bundesliga clubs, FC Bayern Mnchen and Borussia Dortmund.

While Guardiola is one of the most successful managers in the world, Klopp has enjoyed his fair share of success against him, winning four of their eight encounters albeit with three of them coming in Cup encounters.

We know everything about how Pep played with Bayern but that is not important any more because it is different players and different systems, Klopp said on Thursday.

opp also revealed that neither Joel Matip or Philippe Coutinho would feature for his side on Saturday, as both are still nursing ankle injuries, and he was quick to rubbish reports of a possible move to Anfield for Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Record Breaker Pranav Dhanawade Involved in Brawl with Police

Record Breaker Pranav Dhanawade Involved in Brawl with Police

Mumbai: Schoolboy Pranav Dhanawade, who achieved fame with record breaking unbeaten 1009 runs in a school match, was allegedly involved in a brawl with police, after he raised an objection to vacate a ground being used as helipad.

The Subhash ground in Kalyan where Dhanawade was playing along with his friends, was handed over to police for security reasons, a senior police official said.

The Public Welfare Department has constructed a helipad on the ground in view of Union HRD Minister Prakash Jawadekar’s visit to Kalyan. A guard, who was on duty to protect the helipad, came to the players and asked them to stop the game.

Dhanawade and his friends started arguing with police by saying where to play if not on the ground.

In few minutes an officer and some police constables reached the ground, said police.

Heated argument started between police and locals over playing on the ground.

Dhanawade asked police to show permission and hence cops took him to the police station, said DS Suryawanshi of Bajarpeth police station.

Hence Dhanawade was taken to the police station and later let off after police gave him a warning, said the officer.

The player has secured a monthly scholarship for five years from the Mumbai Cricket Association after becoming the first batsman in the world to notch-up a four-figure innings.

Dhanavade from the KC Gandhi Higher Secondary school in Kalyan had batted for 395 minutes in the two-day game against Arya Gurukul in the Mumbai Cricket Association conducted Bhandari Cup inter school cricket tournament to remain unbeaten off 323 balls in which he struck a staggering 59 sixes and 129 fours.

Delhi Daredevils Release ‘Million Dollar Boy’ Pawan Negi and Imran Tahir

Delhi Daredevils Release ‘Million Dollar Boy’ Pawan Negi and Imran Tahir

New Delhi: Pawan Negi, who became a household name for his whopping Rs8.5 crore (USD 1.25 million) bid, has been released by Delhi Daredevils along with five other players for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL).

The other four players released are Australian pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile, Mumbai opener Akhil Herwadkar, former U-19 all-rounder Mahipal Lomror and Delhi Ranji team pacer Pawan Suyal.

Negi, who was bought by Daredevils after an intense bidding war with Rising Pune Supergiants, played eight matches with disastrous results of 57 runs and a total of nine overs in which he went for 84 runs.

Yes, we have decided to release Negi. Obviously, the performance was a factor. The cost (Rs 8.5 crore per season) was way bit too much, a DD official said.

But post auction, life has not been a bed of roses for the young left-arm spinner, who only got to play one match for India in Asia Cup against UAE and warmed the benches till the end of the ICC World T20.

There is full possibility that Negi might go unsold during next years auction as neither Vijay Hazare Trophy nor Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be happening before the auctions.

Asked about the logic of buying Negi at such an exorbitant price, the official said: One needs to understand that we needed an Indian all-rounder last year. The Indian all-rounders were at premium and thats why Negis price shot up. Also Pune bid for him and that led to a bidding war. It can happen at auctions.

Some of Delhis big budget purchases has been baffling over the years including buying Yuvraj Singh for Rs16 crore during the 2015 auction. It was a time when Yuvraj was no longer a force to be reckoned with and did not win a single big game for the franchise only to be released next year.

Tahir had a good first season with Daredevils, but only five wickets from four games last season did not do his case any good.

Tahirs performance last year has not been up to the mark. Also the moment we use him, we exhaust an overseas quota. As far as Coulter-Nile (3 wickets in 4 games) is concerned, he also had fitness issues, the official added.

As far as the Indian trio of Herwadkar, Lomror and Suyal are concerned, none of them played a match last year and there is even lesser chance for them to play this year.

The notable names that have been retained are current India internationals Mohammed Shami, Jayant Yadav, Karun Nair along with Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson and Chris Morris.

IPL 2017: Ishant Sharma, Kevin Pietersen and Dale Steyn Released by Franchises

IPL 2017: Ishant Sharma, Kevin Pietersen and Dale Steyn Released by Franchises

New Delhi: Indian pacer Ishant Sharma, English batting star Kevin Pietersen and South African speedster Dale Steyn were among the biggest names to be released by their respective franchises ahead of the Indian Premier Leagues 10th edition.

As many as 140 cricketers, including 44 overseas players, have been retained, while 63 were let go by the eight franchises for season 10.

Ishant, who just returned to the Indian Test team after a long injury layoff for the ongoing fifth and final match against England in Chennai, fetched Rs 3.8 crore from Rising Pune Supergiants in the players’ auction last year.

Rising Pune Supergiants had finished seventh in the last edition of the league. Rising Pune Supergiants (11), Royal Challengers Bangalore (10) and Kolkata Knight Riders (9) were the franchises to release a major chunk of the players.

Englands former star batsman Pietersen earned Rs 3.5 crore from Pune and South African pace spearhead Steyn had gone for Rs 2.3 crore to debutants Gujarat Lions.

Pietersen, who couldnt play last season following an injury, has been released by Pune along with Ishant, all-rounder Irfan Pathan and spinner Murugan Ashwin.

Delhi Daredevils, who spent Rs 8.5 crore on all-rounder Pawan Negi, have set the player free after he couldnt feature in most of the matches for the team.

Kolkata Night Riders have released their overseas players Jason Holder, Colin Munro, John Hastings, Brad Hogg and Morkel, while Sunrisers Hyderabad have axed Trent Boult and Ashish Reddy, among others along with Morgan.

Other big stars to be omitted included former Australian left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson (Kings XI Punjab), South Africa Morne Morkel (Kolkata Knight Riders), New Zealand duo Corey Anderson and Martin Guptill (Mumbai Indians), Australias Nathan Coulter-Nile (Delhi Daredevils) and Englands ODI skipper Eoin Morgan (Sunrisers Hyderabad).

5th Test: Karun Nair 2nd Indian to Slam Triple Ton, PM Modi Lauds Batsman

5th Test: Karun Nair 2nd Indian to Slam Triple Ton, PM Modi Lauds Batsman

New Delhi: For a country obsessed with cricket, Karun Nair Indias 287th Test cricketer became the countrys second batsman to score a triple century in the longest format of the game on Monday.

The fourth day of the fifth Test between India and England at the MA Chidambaram Stadium had Nair written all over it.

Starting the day unbeaten on 71, he finished unbeaten on 303 when India skipper Virat Kohli decided to call the batsmen in and have a go at the England batsmen.

Chennai Test: As It Happened

At stumps, England were 12/0, trailing Indias first innings score by 270 runs. The Indian bowlers bowled a good line and if the signs in the later stages of the fourth day was anything to go by, the English batsmen could have their task cut out against the Indian spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra.

Before this, only Virender Sehwag had scored two triple hundreds in Tests. And what a knock it was from Nair. He cut, he pulled, he drove, he flicked and most impressively, he swept anything and everything that was pitched in his half by the England spinners.

None other than Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the way in congratulating the Indian middle-order batsman for his heroics in Chennai.

Congratulations on the historic triple century ,We all are delighted & proud of your remarkable feat.

300 runs new

While Nair started off cautiously in the first hour, he gained in confidence as he scored his maiden Test ton. With Murali Vijay holding one end up, Nair was happy to play the aggressors role. The two looked in complete ease as they brought up their 50-run stand. But just after Nair got to his century, India lost Vijay (29) against the run of play leg before wicket to Liam Dawson.

England were happy to go into lunch having dismissed Indias last top-order batsman. But the post-lunch session belonged to the Indians again as the duo of Nair and Ashwin grew from strength to strength. While Nair looked to once again play the attacking role, Ashwin was happy playing second fiddle.

England skipper Alastair Cook look lost for ideas as he turned to all his bowlers in hope of a wicket. But India went into the tea break with the score on 582/5 with Nair on 195 and Ashwin on 54. India scored 119 runs in the session without losing a wicket.

The last session did start well for England as the visitors dismissed Ashwin (67) soon after the two had put on 181 for the 6th wicket. But it was soon Jadejas turn to join in the party.

But before that, it was Nairs turn to become the third Indian to score convert his maiden Test ton into a double ton. He followed the feats of Dilip Sardesai and Vinod Kambli.

Back to the match, while Ashwin was happy playing second fiddle, Jadeja looked to match Nair in taking the English bowlers to the cleaners.

And soon, Indias scoring rate crossed the 6-per over mark. It looked like two batsmen were busy batting in the death overs of a T20 innings.

While Jadeja looked to hit straight down the ground, Nair was busy showcasing his prowess all over. The two looked to be in cruise mode before Jadeja (51) was out trying to further up the ante, caught by Jake Ball off Dawson. The two put on 138 at a strike-rate of 138 for the seventh wicket.

Post that, it was all about Umesh Yadav standing ground and Nair needing the one run to become only the first Indian batsman to convert his maiden Test hundred into a triple hundred. And he did that with a boundary as the whole Indian dressing room stood up to applaud him.

In the process, Nair also became the sixth youngest to score a Test triple ton. He also surpassed Azhar Ali (302*) as the highest individual run-scorer in an innings in Tests this calendar year.

Not just that, he also joined the elite company of Gary Sobers (365*) and Bob Simpson (311) to become the third-highest score as maiden Test hundred.

Team – India
Opposition – Australia
Ground – Mohali

It is not for nothing that Virat Kohli is known as the King of Chases. But what he did that night in Mohali was simply awe-striking.

He had earlier in the year already shown his prowess when India toured Down Under. But to play such a knock in a high-profile Super 10 game of a World T20 definitely requires nerves of steel.

Australia had the game in the bag after batting first and registering 160. But Kohli had other ideas.

He first settled down with an injured Yuvraj Singh for company and the chose the right to hit the overdrive mode as skipper MS Dhoni joined him. It was a night that will stay etched in the mind of cricket fans across the world for years to come.

Player – Joe Root
Runs – 83
4s/6s – 6/4
ST Rate – 188.6
Team – England
Opposition – South Africa
Ground – Mumbai
Match Date – 18 March 2016

Scoring 80s is no longer a big deal in T20 cricket. But what makes Joe Roots knock at the Wankhede Stadium stand out is the sheer pressure of chasing 229 against a quality South African attack.

The small boundaries definitely helped his cause slightly, but then, Root was up to the challenge of taking the attack to the opposition.

Till that night, he was known more for his copybook style of batting. But with four sixes and six boundaries, he showed the world that he too can score at a strike rate of 188.63. And the occasion made it all the more special a Group 10 game of the World T20.

Player – Glenn Maxwell
Runs – 145*
4s/6s – 14/9
ST Rate – 223.0
Team – Australia
Opposition – Sri Lanka
Ground – Pallekele

For the record, it wasnt any high-profile clash and just the opening game of a two-match series between Australia and Sri Lanka in Pallekele. But that knock once again silenced all those critics who felt that Glenn Maxwell was a flash in the pan.

A quiet World T20 hadnt helped his reputation and his place in the national team was being questioned by all and sundry. But that night, Maxwell decided to stick it out and cement his place back in the team. And the end result was a beautiful show of batsmanship from one of the most talented cricketers of this decade.

He played the Lankan spinners really well and by the time he was done, Australia were sitting pretty on 263/3 after 20 overs. No wonder they won the game by 85 runs.

Player – Chris Gayle
Runs – 100*
4s/6s – 5/11
ST Rate – 208.3
Team – West Indies
Opposition – England
Ground – Mumbai
Match Date – 16 March 2016

Universe Boss isnt a tag that was given to Gayle for fun. He had earned it through sheer hardwork and dedication. And for all those who thought that Gayle was good to shine only in the various domestic T20 leagues across the world, the West Indian decided to remind the world what he brought to the table.

The opening game of the 2016 World T20 and what does England face? A Gayle storm. His knock that night had 11 humongous sixes and each of them ensured that the World T20 would be a sellout.

It was the perfect advertisement for the games shortest version. As for the Englishmen, they were happy that it was over with 11 balls to spare.

Player – KL Rahul
Runs – 110*
4s/6s – 12/5
ST Rate – 215.6
Team – India
Opposition – West Indies
Ground – Lauderhill
Match Date – 27 August 2016

It was a knock that came in a losing cause, but then, nobody can deny that KL Rahul showcased that day that he has it in him to represent India in all three formats.

Known to open the batting, he came in at number 4, after India lost the wicket of Virat Kohli early. Chasing WIs total of 245 wasnt easy, but he was up for the challenge.

Most impressive was the fact that he outscored Indias finisher MS Dhoni without a sweat. Had Dhoni not messed up in the last couple of deliveries, Rahuls dream knock would have ended in a winning cause.

Junior Hockey World Cup: Hardships Spurred Indian Colts to Dream Big

Junior Hockey World Cup: Hardships Spurred Indian Colts to Dream Big

New Delhi: India’s victory in the Junior Hockey World Cup has once again raised hopes of a revival of the sport in the country. While the senior team has been producing encouraging results this year, the triumph of the colts reaffirms the fact that the next generation is also on the right track.

India’s victory in the junior World Cup is only their second in the long history of the tournament and comes a decade and a half after their maiden triumph in 2001. While, Harendra Singh’s boys were one of the pre-tournament favourites, they still had to get the better of a strong field to finally come up trumps.

While the on-field performances got a lot of attention, the real story of these boys lies in their fight against hardships to become world champions.

Captain Harjeet Singh, goalkeepers Vikas Dahiya and Krishan Bahadur Pathak, defenders Harmanpreet Singh and Varun Kumar, midfielder Sumit Kumar and forward Ajit Kumar Pandey, all come from humble backgrounds. One things that binds these seven together, apart from the world conquering feat, is that their fathers worked day and night to ensure that their wards could represent the country.

“My father never refused anything to me. My stick used to break while playing but he made sure I get a new one. He has always supported me and helped me achieving my goals,” Harjeet told News18 during an exclusive interview.

Harjeet’s father had a monthly income of five thousand rupees, but he did all that he could to help his son realise his dream of playing for the country.

“He was a truck driver and used to return home after one or two weeks. Before starting his truck, he used to ask me – “Kuch chaiye tujhe” (Do you want anything?),” Harjeet recollected

“I knew it was tough for him to fulfill all my desires, but he did it with a smile on his face,” he said.

Goal-keepers Vikas Dahiya and Krishan Bahadur Pathak have similar stories to tell.

Dahiya whose heroics in the penalty-shootout against Australia in the semi-final gave India a crack at the title recollects how his father arranged money to buy a good goal-keeping kit for him.

“My father works as a truck driver in a factory. Despite earning not so well, he never said no to me.”

“He arranged everything required for the sport. Hockey is not that expensive a game, but when you are a goal-keeper, you need a good kit to stay safe and that is expensive. I have seen my father and mother arranging money for me. He knew my madness for the sport. He provided me with everything that I needed,” Vikas said.

Reserve keeper Krishna Bahardur Pathak, who originally hails from Nepal, lost his father earlier this year. His father Tek Bahadur worked as a crane operator.

Despite receiving a go-ahead from coach Harendra Singh for going back to perform his fathers last rites, who had expired in his home town Lugdi in Nepal, a young Krishan decided to stay back in order to represent the national team on the tour of England.

“My father came in search of a job in India. My sisters and brothers were born in Nepal, but I was born in Kapurthala. They are all 20 years older to me. I speak to them whenever I get time, I miss them,” Krishan said.

For most of these youngsters, this triumph is just a stepping stone to bigger things that await them in the future. What they need to remember is the hardships that they have faced to reach so far and keep their feet firmly on the ground as they enter an all new phase in their international career.

Here’s a look at the highs and lows of Indian hockey.

Watch Out For This Hockey Team in Future: Harjeet Singh

Lucknow: After leading the Indian side to a memorable World Cup winning victory, India’s captain Harjeet Singh said the current team will “give a lot of joy” to the countrymen in near future.

A clinical India defeated Belgium 2-1 in the summit clash to reclaim the title after a long gap of 15 year.

Harjeet thanked his teammates for the superb show and complemented the packed Major Dyan Chand Astroturf stadium here for support throughout the tournament.

“I would like to thank all the players who aimed to win this trophy. Everybody has put in a lot of hardwork under discipline. We all had one aim and we thankfully managed to achieve that today,” an emotional Harjeet said at the post-match press conference.

“The crowd support gave us a lot of confidence but we played according to our structure which we have been implementing for the last two-and-a-half years. This team is going to give a lot of joy to you all in the future,” skipper Harjeet said.

Harjeet said they approached the match as any other game and just concentrated on performing their duties on the turf.

“We all knew what we have to do in the field, everyone knew their duties. We just concentrated on that and played simple hockey. We played the final like a final.”

“We were leading by two goals and our planning was to sit back and defend and rely on counters. We played according to our plan. Every player put in energy,” he said.

India s coach Harendra Singh said he was assured of winning the trophy when he took over reigns of the team in 2014.

“In April 2014, I had said that we are going to win the trophy, you can ask these boys,” he said.

“The heroes are the players and I won’t take the limelight. These are 18 golden gems of India and it is their day.”

Chief coach of the senior men s team Roelant Oltmans, who was the manager of the junior side here, said the Indian colts played near perfect hockey, which was desired from the boys in a big match.

“The first half was very close to perfect game. But in the second half we gave them a little bit too much initiative to be honest. But not one second in this game I was worried”, said Oltmans.

The boys did a fantastic job and all the credit to these 18 players,” the Dutchman said.

Belgium coach Jeroen Baart said the crowd support did make a difference on Sunday.

“India started really well. Our boys didn’t handle the crowd and the atmosphere really well. They (India) were pretty fast. After the initial stages we became more patient and that gave us a little bit of momentum but they scored another goal,” he said.

Baart, however, was proud with the way his wards played in a big match.

“I am very proud of the boys they played in the second half. They adjusted to the crowd pretty well. They were patient and didn’t try to force themselves,” he said.

“But it was not very easy to play India in India at such a fantastic atmosphere. We weren’t good enough on the day to beat India in India.”

Junior Hockey World Cup 2016: India Beat Belgium 2-1 to Clinch Title After 15 Years

Junior Hockey World Cup 2016: India Beat Belgium 2-1 to Clinch Title After 15 YearsNew Delhi: Indian colts thumped Belgium 2-1 in the final to clinch the 2016 Junior Hockey World Cup title after a 15-year-gap in Lucknow.

It turned out to be a historic day for India as they reclaimed the title for the second time in the history of the tournament. India had last won way back in 2001, under Gagan Ajit Singh’s leadership, in Australia.

The home side dominated the match from the first whistle with Belgium hardly getting a glimpse of the Indian goal in the opening stages of the first half.

Harendra Singh’s troops were duly rewarded for their attacking intent as a brilliant reverse hit from Gurjant Singh gave India the lead in the 9th minute itself.

The Belgian goalkeeper came down rushing from the goal to the edge of the box to thwart the Indian chance but Gurjant improvised and hit a brilliant strike from zero angle and the ball landed in the right hand top corner of the goal.

The Indian colts then doubled the lead in the first half itself with Simranjeet Singh getting on the scoresheet this time. Simaranjeet’s shot from the edge of the box went inside the goal from underneath Van Doren’s leg.

India got two penalty corners in the second half but failed to convert either of them.

Belgium pulled one back via a penalty corner in the dying minutes of the game to make it a respectable score of 2-1.

Colombia Plane Crash: Football Team’s Plane Crashed After Skipping Refuel Stop: Report

La Paz, Bolivia: The plane that crashed in Colombia killing 71 people including Brazilian footballers had skipped a scheduled refueling stop, media quoted a representative of the Bolivian airline as saying.

“The plane should have refueled in Bogota,” but instead bypassed the Colombian capital and headed straight for its destination Medellin, Gustavo Vargas, a representative of airline LAMIA, was quoted as saying in Bolivian newspaper Pagina Siete.

“The pilot was the one who took the decision not to enter (into Bogota for refueling), because he thought the fuel would last.”

Colombian authorities are investigating what made the plane crash in the mountains of northwest Colombia on Monday night.

The crash killed 71 people including most of the Chapecoense football team from Brazil. Six people including three players miraculously survived.

Announcing the disaster on Monday night, the aviation authority said the plane reported electrical problems just before the crash.

But a Colombian military source told AFP: “It is very suspicious that despite the impact there was no explosion. That reinforces the theory of the lack of fuel.”

Brazilian media said the plane’s fuel capacity may have been inferior to the amount required for the distance of its journey from Santa Cruz in Bolivia to Medellin.

Colombian media, citing investigators, said the plane may have had to wait for another flight to touch down in Medellin before it could land.

Colombian broadcaster W Radio aired a recording of what it said was the captain of another aircraft who said he had heard the pilot of the doomed plane over the radio reporting fuel problems followed by an electrical failure.

British, Bolivian and Brazilian investigators headed to Colombia to help with the probe, authorities said.
